Concern over sale of volatile substances

THE Government should put in place regulations that will stop hardware retailers and other traders from selling volatile substances to minors.

These were the comments by secretary of the Fiji Consumers Association, Paras Sukul.

He said the association was also pleading with retail outlets and traders to practise caution when selling substances such as weedicides, pesticides, glue, paint thinners and other potentially harmful chemicals to children.

“The association is supporting any initiative that will outlaw the sale of harmful products like weedicides, pesticides and other hardware chemicals to children.

“In fact children should never ever be allowed to buy these products,” he said.

Mr Sukul said traders should not wait for laws or regulation to come into effect before actually stopping the sale of harmful substances to minors.

He said traders should exercise corporate responsibility.

“The association also believes that parents have a responsibility not to allow their children to buy these products or use their children on errands to buy these from hardware shops or other retailers,” Mr Sukul said.
