PETRO Oceania Fuels is expected to empty all fuel from the leaking tank to allow engineers to complete repair works.

Petro Oceania said repairs began yesterday, shortly after fuel levels in the tank were reduced to at least halfway, with the work estimated to take three to four hours.

“Our staff are extremely well-trained professionals and by following our Emergency Procedures and by working closely with the Fiji Police and National Fire Authority, we have safely managed this event,” said Petro Oceania chief executive officer James Marryatt.

Meanwhile the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is monitoring the situation.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) has assured the public that all necessary safety measures are in place, with updates to be provided as they become available.

The fuel tank side leak, detected at about 5am yesterday, triggered the immediate activation of Petro Oceania’s emergency response procedures to contain the spill, protect public safety and minimise environmental impact.

“A full review is already underway into why this happened so we can ensure that it doesn’t happen again,” Mr Marryat said.
