THE two-day grassroots Vatulele 7s tournament, supported by the Fiji Sports Council, concluded yesterday at Lawaqa Park, marking an important step in reviving community rugby for the island.

President of Vatulele Rugby Union, Apenisa Vodo, expressed gratitude for the support provided, saying the assistance has helped bring rugby back to life after years of inactivity following the COVID period.

“It’s been a while since COVID and we are trying to activate the Union again,” Vodo said.

He shared that elders from the island travelled to witness the two-day competition and were excited to see Vatulele rugby return in a big way.

The tournament also marked a special milestone, as it was the first time for many from the island to come to Viti Levu for such an event.

Funds raised during the tournament will go towards supporting the Union and helping players back home, many of whom depend on tapa farming and fishing for their livelihood.

In the early final results, Dominion Brothers defeated Loloma 12–7 in the Under-21 Bowl final, while Bula Brothers beat Army Red 17–12 in the Men’s Bowl competition.
