The Standing Committee on Natural Resources has called for sweeping upgrades and reforms across Fiji’s port sector, urging Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) to modernise infrastructure, improve efficiency and strengthen long-term sustainability.

In its consolidated review of FPCL’s 2020 to 2023 Annual Reports, tabled in Parliament, the Committee emphasised the urgent need to accelerate capital investment to expand capacity and meet growing demand.

Key recommendations include a major upgrade of Malau Port in Labasa, with calls for it to be considered a designated port of entry under the Government’s Look North Policy.

The Committee also proposed that Government explore the phased decommissioning of Levuka Port, subject to feasibility studies and stakeholder consultation.

Operational concerns were highlighted at several locations, including Malau, where a damaged dolphin structure was identified as an immediate safety risk requiring urgent repair.

For Savusavu, the Committee noted existing constraints and recommended the development of a modern port facility at Balaga Bay to support increasing cruise and cargo traffic.

The Committee also urged FPCL to improve cargo handling efficiency, reduce vessel turnaround times, and strengthen service delivery.

On the financial front, it called for stronger revenue management and cost controls, alongside efforts to secure climate resilience funding.

Additional recommendations include advancing digital monitoring systems, enhancing governance and risk management, improving environmental oversight, and promoting gender transparency in reporting.

The Committee stressed that modern, resilient and efficient ports are critical to Fiji’s economic growth and connectivity.
