THE Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission will not change the Constitution because their work does not include any work related to the document itself.
Commission chairperson Marcus Brand said they were operating within the limitations of the current Constitution.
“Our mandate also includes explicitly the ability to talk about events and to talk with people who are covered by the immunity provisions in the current Constitution,” he said
Mr Brand made the comments after there were suggestions for them to ask the Government to remove the immunity of those involved in previous political upheaval.
“We are operating within those limits.
“Our mandate actually explicitly includes the possibility to talk about even those events and individuals covered by these immunity provisions.”
He said the commission was focused on truth and would not enter political debates.
“We are not, as a commission, going to be involved in the debate on constitutional reform, or on electoral reform, or other things that fall outside the mandate of the commission.”
