Cases left dormant for years have not been forgotten.

And affected families have been reassured that police will give these unsolved murders and serious crimes renewed attention.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu said a cold case team has already begun reviewing evidence and will report directly to him.

“We understand and empathise with the families of the victims,” Mr Tudravu said.

“I want to personally assure them the team is solely focused on investigating these cases, and the decision to have a dedicated cold cases team will also assist the CID focus on other pending cases and new ones that come to hand.”

Mr Tudravu also addressed public concerns regarding the perceived imbalance in drug enforcement efforts, dismissing the misconception that Operation Sasamaki was more focused on marijuana rather than the more harmful methamphetamine.

“I want to set the record straight again.

“Operation Sasamaki is equally focused on white and green drugs.

“The arrests and seizures in relation to marijuana are more as cultivation is taking place in Fiji, and therefore, supply is more.

“This is why we have teams who are on rotation and camping in known cultivating areas.

“As for methamphetamine, these are being produced in very small quantities by unprofessional low-grade cooking, thus, equating to less seizures for arrests for white drugs.”
