FIJI Warriors rugby team head coach Kele Leawere has named a young and powerful team for the opening World Rugby Pacific Challenge clash against Samoa A at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

He said the squad consisted of most players who represented Fiji at the Junior World Championship in Argentina last year.

“We will not take Samoa very lightly,” the former Flying Fijians skipper said.

“We are here to defend our title. It is important for the boys to know there is a record out there to defend.

“They know it is a hard task and they are ready for Samoa.”

The front-row has props Meli Tuni of Vuci, Tokatoka, Tailevu, and Joseva Nasaroa. The hooker is Lino Vasuinadi.

The other forwards are Fiji 7s squad member Anasa Qaranivalu, towering Chris Minimbi, Vilive Miramira and Josateki Tuituba.

“It is important that we set the platform for our remaining game. The boys know what is required and it will not be easy.

“They (Samoa) are a physical side and when island teams meet, its always physical. It is important that the boys know their roles and responsibilities.”

The backline has skipper Tuidraki Samusamuvodre and Simione Kuruvoli, who were part of the Fiji Warriors side last year.

They are supported by Filimoni Savou at inside centre who will pair Jonetani Vasurakauta and wingers Jiuta Wainiqolo and Epeli Momo.

Samoa A and Fiji Warriors play at 5pm today.

Tonga A and Junior Japan will play at 2.30pm at the ANZ Stadium.
