SWIRE Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson has praised players performances at the Sun Bell Tuna Drua 10s tournament at Prince Charles Park in Nadi yesterday.
Jackson highlighted the dedication and skill displayed by both the Drua squads and the local teams, calling it a testament to Fiji’s rugby talent.
“I thought it was an awesome day. The Skipper Cup teams didn’t have much notice, but they showed up and played extremely well,” Jackson said.
“The semi-finals and final were outstanding, and it was great to see such competitive rugby.”
The Fijian Drua Blues won the final beating Fijian Drua Green 14-5.
Jackson reserved special praise for players like Nadi’s Kalioni Ratunabuabua, who was scouted at the Mataso 7s and is currently under Fiji Rugby High Performance Unit and trains with the Drua. He was playing for Fijian Drua Blue yesterday.
“He was brilliant. Kalioni played every minute for us in the Drua and he’s been outstanding since we spotted him.”
Joweli Wailevu, a young Ba player, who suffered a broken arm during the tournament playing for Drua Green, was also praised.
“It’s unfortunate for Joweli, but he’s a talented player and we’re hopeful for his recovery,” he added.
Jackson explained the significance of connecting the Drua with local teams, describing the tournament as a valuable opportunity to blend professional rugby with grassroots talent.
“It’s awesome to play against the teams in the west and combine the Drua with local players. The tournament was a real success and a great turnout for everyone,” Jackson said.
The coach also stressed the importance of these events for talent scouting.
“We’re always looking for young, exciting players, and these tournaments give us the chance to see the incredible talent Fiji has to offer,” he said.
With the 2024 preseason nearing its end, the Drua team is set to travel to Kadavu for their next training camp next Monday. Jackson acknowledged the physical toll on his players but stressed the importance of preparation.
“Sitting on the boat for six or seven hours will be tough, but the boys deserve some rest. It’s a great way to finish the preseason and look ahead to 2025,” he said.
