Shoppers be warned, you are being watched!

The Suva Retailers Association in collaboration with Bondwell Fiji and the Fiji Police Force have installed 22 face-recognition cameras around Suva’s CBD, in Cumming St, Mark St, Waimanu Rd, and Nina St.

Association president Jiten Patel told The Fiji Times the cameras were installed last month as a response to a rise in petty crime such as pickpocketing and stealing from shops in Suva.

“One good thing is that we, the Suva Retailers, have installed about 22 cameras in the city, and the police is already monitoring through the command centre.

“So, if you’re walking on Cumming St, Mark St, Waimanu Rd, Nina St, you’re being watched,” Mr Patel said.

“It’s already installed and up and running, a partnership with Bondwell and Suva Retailers Association.

“It’s a $65,000 project that we have done.

“Bondwell had come on board as a major sponsor for this project.

“A lot of shops have their own cameras but who monitors it?

“This project has been in the pipeline for many years, but no action was taken.

“We finally thought that it was time to push for it so we did it.

“We have got face-recognition cameras installed as well, and it’s all connected to the Police Command Centre at the Totogo Police Station.”
