A GROUP of people who carried out a city-wide cleanup of Lautoka last Saturday described their actions as a reflection of their faith.
Community spirit prevailed over wet weather as about 30 members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus turned up for their regular community service initiative.
Led by church leaders, the group covered a designated route from SPD through Navutu to the main roundabout and towards the Natabua junction.
In a statement, the church said volunteers focused on removing plastic, cans, bottles and paper waste from roadside walkways and drains, collecting a total of 12 large sacks of rubbish.
“This is how we live our faith, by showing love through action,” a church representative said.
The clean-up was carried out with the support of the Lautoka City Council, which also assisted with rubbish disposal.
Organisers described the initiative as a practical lesson in civic responsibility and environmental stewardship.
A church representative said the campaign had a four-fold purpose.
“We aim to help maintain Lautoka’s beauty, combat environmental pollution through proper waste disposal, educate our younger generation to be responsible citizens, and contribute tangibly to the well-being of our community.”
Beyond spiritual teaching, the church said it regularly engages in charity and volunteer work to improve health and hygiene in local neighbourhoods.
The Shincheonji Church of Jesus plans to continue its clean-up campaigns and expand into other volunteer initiatives as part of its ongoing contribution to Lautoka and its residents.
