The Anglican Church is taking steps to encourage its membership to take ownership of the responsibility of care towards the environment.

Bishop of the Anglican Church Diocese of Polynesia the Reverend Sione Ulu’ilakepa said this at a clean-up campaign at Suva Point yesterday morning.

“This is an initiative that we had started back in 2015 and we do it every two months,” Mr Ulu’ilakepa  said.

The bishop said the clean-up initiative was a vital component of the ongoing Certificate IV in Resilience program, which is offered by the University of the South Pacific’s Pacific Technical and Further Education (TAFE), in partnership with St John the Baptist Theological College of the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia.

“This is a compulsory unit to be taken by all theological students who are to be ordained priests.”

He said the event was their way of giving back to the planet.

“I wish to extend to the community that caring can start from just making sure that the environment is clean.”

The clean-up started at Suva Point and extended to My Suva Picnic Park. About 45 people participated and collected 30 garbage bags full of rubbish.
