THIS year’s Christmas will be a ‘sad one’ for them, say residents of Nabua Muslim League settlement in Suva. Turaga ni koro (village headman) Karalo Naituki, who says he has called the settlement home for the past 34 years, said this Christmas would be a tearful one.
“We have been issued a 30-day notice to vacate this land, that is until Saturday, December 28,” Mr Naituki said.
“We have no place to move to, so what can we do? We’ll just stay here and see what happens next.
“We can move to our koro (village) but we have our house here. How will we take all this?”
He said they were worried as they did not have money to dismantle and rebuild their homes.
Mr Naituki said he wrote to the Government requesting assistance.
“I hand-delivered a letter to the Prime Minister before the Parliament sitting ended this year.
“I have explained to him about our situation and requested the Government to help us in relocating.
Another resident, Anita Kumar, 48, shared similar sentiments.
“I have stayed here for 40 years now,” Ms Kumar said.
“This Christmas has taken away all our joy and happiness and has brought tears to our eyes. I humbly request the Government to help us so that we can be relocated to a safe place.”
