CHINESE electric vehicles will be hitting Fiji’s roads soon with the launch in China this week of the China (Yunnan)– Fiji New Energy Vehicle Export Project, a major investment partnership between publicly-listed FMF Foods Ltd and Yunnan Maimiao Automobile Service Co. Ltd.

Speaking at the event, executive vice governor of Yunnan Province Zhao Junmin said the collaboration was important in driving forward China’s green development agenda and supporting the Pacific region’s transition to sustainable energy.

“This partnership is more than a commercial agreement, it represents a shared vision for a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable Pacific,” FMF Group director and chief executive officer Sanjay Punja said in a statement issued yesterday.

“FMF is proud to work alongside our Chinese partners to help accelerate the adoption of new energy vehicles in Fiji and the wider region.”

Through the partnership, Chinese NEV brands such as Wuling, Geely, SAIC, and Foton Times will officially enter the Fiji and South Pacific markets.

The project, directly aligned to Fiji’s Blue Pacific 2050 Strategy and national carbon neutrality goals, has an estimated annual export value of over $US80 million ($F181.86m) in years to come, according to the two parties.

At the launch, Mr Punja and FMF Group general manager Anuj Patel formally signed several cooperation agreements with Yunnan Maimiao Automobile Service Co. Ltd covering a wide range of initiatives — including the construction of integrated photovoltaic, energy storage, and charging infrastructure, as well as the introduction and servicing of leading Chinese new energy vehicle brands.

The initiative also acknowledged the contribution of Yang Hongshu, a prominent overseas Chinese leader in the South Pacific whose efforts helped establish the collaboration.
