A delegation from the People’s Republic of China this week presented a comprehensive proposal for Fiji’s new sugar mill project.
Government has committed to building a new mill in the West, but hasn’t revealed details of its location.
The team, representing the China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC)—a major state-owned enterprise with wide expertise in industrial and agricultural infrastructure—outlined initial mill designs, proposed technology upgrades and the funding model currently being considered.
The presentation took place at the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) Training Centre in Lautoka.
Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh attended the briefing, alongside Member of Parliament Biman Prasad, FSC Board Chair Nitya Reddy, FSC board members and Permanent Secretary Dr Vinesh Kumar.
The Ministry of Sugar is expected to assess the proposal further as consultations continue between Fiji and China on advancing mill modernisation and long-term industry sustainability.
