FOLLOWING the installation of the Tui Nayau, Sau ni Vanua o Lau, na Tui Lau, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, Chinese Ambassador Zhou Jian gifted about $100,000 worth of solar street lights, household solar facilities and a minivan to the people of Lau.

Mr Jian said it was an important initiative by China to support the traditional installation as well as the broader improvement of people’s livelihoods in Lau.

“This donation reflects China’s determination to support rural revitalisation in Fiji,” Mr Jian said.

“Prime Minister Rabuka witnessed China’s extraordinary achievements in poverty alleviation and rural revitalisation during his visit to China in August last year.

“We believe what the Chinese people can achieve, the Fijian people can also achieve.”

He said China would always be a good brother and partner on Fiji’s development path, and continue to provide support to the best of its ability for Fiji’s rural development.

“This donation reflects China’s commitment to supporting Fiji to address climate change.

“Climate change poses a common challenge for all nations. Pacific island countries are the most vulnerable and their people’s survival is under threat by climate change.”
