Fiji’s Minister for Education Rosy Akbar says children should spend time with their families and loved ones this Diwali.

And she adds children must also reflect on what they have achieved in the past, and ponder on their hopes and ambitions for the future.

Ms Akbar echoed this advice in her Diwali message as she conveyed her good wishes to all students and teachers around the country.

She said Diwali was celebrated to mark the victory of light over darkness; and like all religious festivals celebrated in Fiji, is celebrated with families and friends.

“Diwali teaches discipline, goodness, divinity, humility, tolerance, togetherness, and kindness, as parents and guardians it is our responsibility to inculcating these values in our children,” Ms Akbar said.

Parents and guardians were also urged to be vigilant and supervise children with the use of firecrackers.

Diwali this year will be celebrated on Sunday, November 15.
