Children on tour

THE students of Lomolomo Public School could not hide their excitement as they visited The Fiji Times in Suva yesterday.

The Year 3 to Year 8 students, all 52 of them, got a chance to see how Fiji’s oldest newspaper was run.

“This is our first trip around Viti Levu and we made sure that we visited The Fiji Times because these children have only read the newspaper but do not know how the whole paper comes about,” schoolteacher Karunagaran Nair said.

Following their visit to Suva, they would visit Tavua and then Vatukoula where they hoped to visit the Vatukoula Gold Mines.

“These excursions are educational for the children.

“They visit places they have only heard about and it helps with their knowledge when they return to school.”

Meanwhile, students of Navatu Primary School in Rakiraki yesterday said paying $15 for a one-day trip to the Capital City was worth it.

The Year 1 to 8 students were accompanied by their teachers, parents and guardians for a trip to The Fiji Times, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation Ltd, Fiji Museum and the ANZ Stadium.

Schoolteacher Kunal Kumar said the tour was an education and informative one with students learning so much on how newspaper organisations produce newspapers for its readers as well as the historic items stored away in the museum.

“The students can now see for themselves what they have been taught in the classrooms as well and we can easily relate to these things when we teach,” he said.

The tour group left Rakiraki early yesterday morning so they could spend a lot of time in Suva.
