A LOCAL tour operator at Biausevu Waterfalls in Sigatoka believes visitors should not be allowed to enter the popular swimming spot during bad weather.
Biausevu Waterfall Tour owner Petero Finau said this after the tragic death of a five-year-old tourist who allegedly drowned after being swept away by strong currents while out with her family.
Mr Finau said his tour was closed for the holidays when he received the news.
“I think it is sad because most of us are aware that when the weather is bad, we don’t let anyone go to the waterfall especially tourists,” he said.
“I operate a horse-riding tour to Biausevu and when I see the weather is bad, I tie up my horses. We don’t take anyone.”
He said the swimming spot had an entry fee so he assumed someone allowed them to use the waterfall “even though the weather was bad”.
The five-year-old was believed to be with close family members when she was allegedly swept away by strong currents.
Her body was recovered near the waterfall on Tuesday morning and was conveyed to the Sigatoka Hospital.
Investigations into the alleged drowning incident continue.
Questions sent to Tourism Fiji and the Minister for Tourism yesterday remain unanswered.
