THE Great Council of Chiefs has expressed fresh concerns at the alarming increase in sex-related crimes, saying the punishment meted out to perpetrators of such offences was too lenient.
GCC chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula said such punishment “does not meet some of the behaviours of certain members of the society”.
As of last month, 124 persons were accused of sexual offences involving 99; 52 were minors, and 47 were above the age of 18.
Ratu Viliame said church leaders have commented on the issue and that the matter would be presented for evaluation by sub-committees and other institutions.
“The approach needs to be holistic; the church, the Fiji Human Rights Commission and other sectors of the community must discuss it,” he said.
