Chess team finishes campaign

THE Fiji chess teams ended its campaign at the 41st Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway with draws against Sudan (women) and Namibia (open).

The women’s team won their games on board one and three through Women’s FIDE Masters (WFM) Kieran Lyons and Hilda Vukikomoala.

Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) Gloria Sukhu and Aarti Sewak lost on board two and four to settle for a 2-2 draw.

The national women’s team finished 112 out of 136 countries that participated in this competition.

In the open grade, Candidate Master (CM) Calvin Prasad forced to resign against higher ranked board one FIDE Master Leonhard Mueller.

In board two, CM Charles Eichab followed shortly after by defeating CM Manoj Kumar but the Fijians hit back in board three and four through CM Sanmogam Goundar and Taione Sikivou to tie the match 2-2.

“I believe that both teams succeeded in the way they played and Team Fiji can return home with a smile,” said Fiji’s official Olympiad delegate Doctor Virgilio de Asa in a Chess Fiji statement.

The Fiji open team finished on 153 out of 177 countries.
