George Speight should reveal the identities of those who were behind the 2000 coup.
Former prime minister and Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said many of those responsible have never been held to account.
Mr Chaudhry, whose People’s Coalition government was overthrown during the May 2000 coup, made the comments when asked to respond to Mr Speight’s recent appearance before the Constitution Review Commission.
He said many Fijians wanted Mr Speight to disclose the names of others involved in planning and supporting the coup.
“People would like to see him do that,” Mr Chaudhry said.
“I hope he considers this seriously, because we know that there are other people behind him.”
He said previous statements by former journalist Jo Nata suggested that others involved in the coup had escaped justice. “Probably there are many.
“Jo Nata himself said there are people who are still roaming free, so it proves that there are others who are really behind the coup.”
“Only Nata and George Speight can name them.”
Making his submission to the Constitution Review Commission on Thursday, Mr Speight said he was not the only one that should reveal the truth.
“There are many people who have the truth, if the desire behind the process is healing, justice, and then moving forward, then I’m ready,” he said.
Meanwhile, when asked whether he had forgiven Mr Speight for overthrowing his government and holding him and members of his Cabinet hostage for 56 days, Mr Chaudhry said no request for forgiveness had ever been made.
“He hasn’t asked for forgiveness. But, you know, there’s something else, I would not comment on that.”
When pressed if he was prepared to forgive Mr Speight, Mr Chaudhry replied, “I can’t answer that.”
