The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is working hard to change the public’s perception of the institution.
During a meet and greet session with the media in Suva yesterday, FICAC acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai said the commission has been perceived as a body used by government to “target certain individuals”.
“That was the perception by the public previously and that’s what the honourable Attorney-General had mentioned (recently),” said Ms Puleiwai.
“And that is something we are wanting to change, the perception of the public.
“We are working tirelessly on that and that is why we wanted you to come on board as well in helping us change the perception of members of the public.”
She said FICAC was established for a reason.
“The institution has a duty internationally and nationally.
“Domestically, FICAC is established under the Constitution, and we have a vital role to play in ensuring that the rights of individuals are respected. Not only that, our duty is mandated under the
FICAC Act and that is to carry out investigations when we receive complaints of corruption related matters.”
