Changes to the Education Act are on the priority list of the Attorney-General’s Chambers for 2024.

In an interview with The Fiji Times, Attorney-General Siromi Turaga said he would meet senior education officials to discuss the review.

“They know the challenges facing the Education Act and in implementing it,” said Mr Turaga.

“Especially with all the reform that needs to be done because now they have come up with their five-year and 10-year strategic plans.

“So, now we have to review the law so that it goes along with these strategic plans.”

Mr Turaga said meetings with other government agencies on the review of their legislations would also be held.

“I will be calling next week a meeting of all government agencies and statutory organisations so we can talk about the challenges they face.”

Mr Turaga said each government agency should be able to identify the problems with their policies and make suggestions on how they could be changed.

“You may have seen MSAF talking about their fines and what not.

“I keep on emphasising the fact that you don’t have to wait for the court to declare there is a Lacuna in the law or the law needs to be reviewed.

“As a practitioner of that legislation, they should know what the challenges are, and they should at the same time make recommendations on what needs to be changed.”
