Japan -based professional golfer Dinesh Chand says the sport of golf is growing in Fiji. Chand, who took part in the Vuksich and Borich-sponsored Fiji PGA Championship at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club (DGRC) yesterday, would sponsor two 18-hole events next month.
On February 4, at the DGRC, Dinesh Chand Invitational Pro-Am would be played, where professionals would play for $7000 prize money while amateurs would compete for $5000 worth of prizes.
A week later, Chand would be sponsoring another event at the Lautoka Golf Club.
“Around 34 players from Japan would be part of the event and I am expecting lot of players coming in for the event,” he said.
“Golf has grown so big in the country and things have changed so much, the young boys are hitting so long in comparison to what I was doing during my tour.
“The reason why I am sponsoring the two tournaments is that I want the game to grow in Fiji and give back something to the community.”
Chand said the best part of yesterday’s event was when he was able to meet some of his old friends.
“It is nice to see all these new boys and it has been a good day of golf,” added Chand.
