Fiji-born Umlesh Chand is a popular importer of Fijian goods in Japan.

The Nadi born and raised businessman lives in Yokohama, Japan where he operates an online business known as “Fiji Time Japan” and imports various products from Fiji.

He is the only businessman in Japan importing goods from Fiji and has considered himself blessed with the support of the Fijian Government and the Fijian embassy officials in Tokyo.

Among products in high demand, he said were Paradise Beverages products such as Fiji Gold, Fiji Bitter and Vonu Beer.

Over three months, Mr Chand spends between $10,000 and $15,000 on the beer products as demand continues to rise from Japanese customers.

“The demand has continued to grow since 2021 when I started my business during COVID and there was limited movement and no travelling as well,” he said.

“Breakfast Crackers biscuits are popular here and when my supply arrives, it just finishes quickly as customers buy in quantity.

“My other popular customers in Japan are members of the Fijian community who work here and play rugby here as well and those studying.

“I always make sure to keep their supply because I want them to know that Fiji or home is here too by having Fijian products at home. ”

Other popular products he said were spicy sauces and the Island Style Peanut Butter products.

“My customers in Japan just love it especially the sweet chillie sauce because it just blends in well with their food as it’s not so spicy.”

He said starting the business was not easy.

“There were a lot of paperwork and challenges that came with it but I didn’t give up and stayed focused. I knew I had to do this and I’m glad I did,” Mr Chand said.

“I have been in Japan since 2002 when I came in as a student and am now married, have three children and we visit Fiji whenever we can.

“I plan to expand my business and come back home soon to look at other products that we can sell here in Japan because I want to make sure that Fiji products are available here.”
