THE Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) has thrown its support behind the proposed National Identity (NID) system, highlighting its importance in improving access to services and strengthening the country’s financial ecosystem.
Speaking during a public consultation in Lautoka, RBF Deputy Governor Esala Masitabua said the central bank had a significant role in the implementation of the system.
“We are going through a lot of technological changes,” he said.
“We are at a stage where we can send money from America, anywhere in the world direct to your M-PAiSA, and where we can transact accordingly.”
Mr Masitabua noted that while digital payments have become efficient, identification processes remained a major bottleneck.
“If you think about going to government services or the bank, the payment side is very efficient, but for you to identify yourselves, you have to take your various forms of IDs.”
He explained that the NID system aimed to address these inefficiencies by streamlining identity verification.
“As supervisor of the financial system, we have the ability to bring banks, insurance companies, and all licensed financial institutions on board.
“So, the Reserve Bank has a huge role to play.”
Mr Masitabua said the initiative would deliver broad benefits, making everyday transactions easier and more accessible for Fijians.
“We have come alongside government to help this project because we understand its benefits … our responsibility is to think of ways that make lives easier.”
