INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women around the world and at the same time, call for greater equality .
In her official address at the Nasinu Sangam Mother’s Club-organised International Women’s Day celebration in Narere yesterday afternoon, Acting Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa said it was a special occasion.
“It’s an occasion to review how far we have come as women as we strive for equality, peace and development,” she said.
“It’s also an opportunity to unite, network and mobilise for meaningful change.
“This year’s celebration theme is Make it Happen and this encourages effective action for advancing and recognising the status of women.
“Equality for women and men is progress for everyone in our nation.
“It leads to inclusive growth, reduces poverty and contributes to peace and security.
“While there have been many achievements since then, many serious gaps remain.”
Mrs Vuniwaqa said this was the time to uphold women’s achievements and recognise the challenges facing them.
“We also have to focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality and mobilise all people to do their part, especially women.
“In Fiji, women comprise 48 per cent of the total population and on this note, the Government continues to provide the support and strengthen partnership with stakeholders concerned for advancement of the status of women in the country.
“The event is a time to reflect on the progresses made, to call for change and to celebrate the acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.”
