Car crushed by branch – Couple dead, one in hospital

An elderly couple died yesterday after a branch of a tree fell on the car they were travelling in along Kasavu in Nausori yesterday.

In a statement from police, spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the vehicle was driven by their daughter.

“A man in his 70s and his 61-year-old wife passed away at the scene of the accident near Kasavu early this morning (yesterday),” she said.

“The two victims from Vitawa, Rakiraki were travelling in a car driven by their 28-year-old daughter when a branch of a rain tree fell on their car.

“The two died at the scene of the accident.

“Another victim, the driver’s uncle who is in his 60s sustained injuries and is admitted at the Nausori Health Centre.

Ms Naisoro said their daughter managed to get out of the car, while National Fire Authority officials and police officers had to retrieve the victims from the wreckage.

“Investigations continue. Meanwhile, the couple’s family declined to comment when approached yesterday but confirmed the victims were Sarita Devi and Dewan Seth.
