SUVA has been crowned the National Football League champion after a lapse of 17 years.
The All Freight Logistic-sponsored side won the 2014 Fiji Sun/Skipper Tuna National Football League competition after beating Rewa 3-1 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori on Friday night.
Ba’s defeat to Labasa 0-2 on Friday night at Govind Park had put the Whites eight points clear on the national league points table with two more rounds of games remaining.
The win over Rewa has also secured Suva’s spot in the Oceania Football Confederation Champions League (O-League).
The Gurjit Singh-coached side scored first in the match through Leone Damudamu to lead 1-0 at the break.
The Delta Tigers responded immediately in the second spell to equalise through Misaele Draunibaka.
However, two more goals from Suva’s Sahil Dave and Ravinesh Karan Singh at the expense of Rewa goalkeeper Benito Waqavou put the match beyond the reach of the Marika Rodu-coached side.
Coach Singh said it was a mission accomplished for the side.
“My aim from last year was to qualify for the O-League and we have done that. I’m so happy to achieve this with the Suva team,” an elated Singh said.
“We are looking forward to represent Fiji in the OFC competition and hope we do well in the tournament.”
Suva has two more league games remaining against Lautoka and Ba.
The Capital City side will host the Sugar City side at the ANZ Stadium today at 3pm before the Ba versus Navua match at 1pm.
