The Electoral Commission yesterday announced April 26 as the date when the campaign period for the 2022 General Election would commence.

It said a meeting yesterday determined that this campaign period would end 48 hours before the date of the general election that will be announced by the President.

Meanwhile, the announcement was welcomed by at least two political parties. Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) leader Viliame Gavoka said the party’s preparations for the general election would go ahead with greater intensity.

“We are thrilled that the way ahead to the elections are becoming clear,” he said.

“We have been preparing for the elections and that will go up with greater intensity as we head to the writ, and ultimately the elections.”

Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube said he hoped all political parties would be subjected to one law during the campaign period.

“Unity Fiji welcomes the official announcement by the Electoral Commission on the campaign date,” said Mr Narube.

“This is a welcomed change from the elections in 2014 and 2018 where the FijiFirst party (FFP) was allowed to place billboards outside the official campaign periods.

“Unity Fiji hopes that this improvement in transparency and clarity will be reflected right throughout the campaign.

“Every political party including the FFP must be subjected to one law.”
