There is a need for everybody in the music industry to work together to raise the standard of music in Fiji, says VT1s managing director Tikiko Korocowiri.

Speaking during the Fiji Music Day celebrations at the Mana Café Events Space in Walu Bay, Suva last week, Mr Korocowiri says local musicians, songwriters and singers tend to “look down on themselves” and “keep denying themselves the opportunity” of having the ability to raise the standard of music.

“The issue here is not the fact that people are not making music because they want to make music, the issue here is that we don’t have any quality standards or anything to sort of match the audience,” said Mr Korocowiri.

“When we look at overseas markets, we thought of that as unattainable.

“But the music industry is moving forward because we are starting to see that we are not local artists, we are artists.

“Anyone can use music production software now. YouTube is there, we all can learn how to master, but the issue was that our artists keep looking down on themselves.

“The industry is for everybody, music is for everybody.

“And I think that we all need to help raise the standard. If those overseas can do it, we can do it.”
