The early release program should be simplified and maximised to ensure the most legible inmates are put out, says former journalist Josefa Nata.
Mr Nata made the statement as concerns were raised by the new Fiji Corrections Services Commissioner Dr Jalesi Nakarawa on prison facilities and overcrowding among inmates.
“We are setting up a community-based rehabilitation farm — Camp Hannah — in Naitasiri to take in up to 60 early release prisoners to prepare them for eventual release to society,” Mr Nata said.
“Camp Hannah operated by the Hannah Foundation of Fiji, a charitable trust set up by ex-prisoners to help release prisoners and street kids towards a life outside crime and prisons.
“The faith-based institutions that tend to have extensive land-holding should have similar programs.
“Prisoners need meaningful lives with practical help along with spiritual guidance.”
