THIS year’s Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea (BFBMT), Fiji’s largest cancer fundraising initiative, was launched yesterday, marking more than two decades of support for the fight against cancer.

The event continues to mobilise communities nationwide, with organisers highlighting the growing urgency of addressing cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Marketing manager for Motibhai Group of Companies, Praneeta Devi, said the campaign has played a key role in supporting thousands of Fijians since its inception.

She said the initiative had united individuals, workplaces, and communities across Fiji, contributing to lifesaving support services, raising critical awareness, and strengthening advocacy efforts in cancer prevention and care.

Ms Devi said increasing awareness around lifestyle-related risks remains critical.

“Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cancer, are not transmitted from person to person but develop due to a combination of lifestyle and environmental factors,” she said.

Increasing awareness and encouraging healthier lifestyles remain a crucial part to this campaign.

Fiji Cancer Society’s CEO Belinda Chan said support from the public remained vital.

“The urgency of our cause has never been greater, and together we can make a profound difference,” she said.

She also urged the hospitality sector to take part, pointing to the success of past cafe programs where restaurants and cafes helped expand the campaign’s reach and engage communities.

She said funds raised would support cancer awareness, advocacy and care services across Fiji, urging organisations and communities to take part.

“This is more than an event, it is a movement of hope, unity, and compassion.”
