THE Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network (PSGDN) yesterday issued a strong call for action as part of World Human Rights Day.
“Human rights are universal, including the rights of LGBTQI+ people,” said PSGDN Interim CEO Loata Tucika.
She said protecting these rights was essential for a safer and more inclusive Pacific.
Ms Tucika urged governments and communities to uphold the dignity and safety of all people, including those with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions.
She pointed out that LGBTQI+ people in the region continue to face human right challenges, including violence, harassment, and discrimination.
“It is vital that states and communities work together to create safe and inclusive environments for everyone.”
She highlighted the organisation’s ongoing work with regional partners such as ILGA Oceania and DIVA for Equality through the DFAT-funded Equality Collaboration, which aims to advance LGBTQI+ rights across the Pacific.
While acknowledging cultural and religious values, she stressed it was essential that LGBTQI+ people were able to live free from violence, hate, and discrimination.
“States have a responsibility to protect all people from harm, including acts of violence, ill-treatment, and harassment, and to ensure accountability and redress when abuses occur.”
She called for stronger measures to prevent discrimination and ensure hate motivated violence was addressed.
“Legislation and policies must be reviewed to ensure they do not unjustly criminalise people because of who they are or how they express their gender.”
“States should uphold international human rights standards while finding culturally sensitive approaches to protection and inclusion.”
