AT just 21 years old, Aidan Caine has emerged as Fiji’s top male badminton player, preparing to represent his country at the upcoming VICTOR Oceania Individual Championships, scheduled to begin today and run on until the 12th at the North Harbour Badminton Centre in Auckland, New Zealand.

Caine, currently the top-ranked male singles badminton player in Fiji, will be a key member of the national team, which comprises eight male and four female leading athletes from the country.

This championship marks his first international competition in badminton, stepping onto a larger stage to test his skills and stamina.

Reflecting on his journey, Aidan shared discovering badminton in his childhood while living in France, transitioning from swimming, which demanded early morning routines he found challenging.

Since seriously dedicating himself to badminton in 2023, he has quickly risen through the ranks, fueled by passion and determination.

Despite badminton not being a mainstream sport in Fiji, Caine is optimistic and focused.

“As you reach the top, there’s practically no one else to compete with locally. I want to shatter that glass ceiling and get exposed to the higher level out there, so I know what is possible in badminton,” he explained.

Caine’s competitive spirit is clear as he prepares for the Oceania Championships.

“My coach says I have a lot of stamina, so I plan to give 120% from the first point and go as hard as I can,” he stated.

While acknowledging some nerves ahead of his debut, he remains mentally prepared, reminding himself to “breathe in, breathe out.”

The Fijian badminton team, under the guidance of Coach Mr. Steven Low (BWF Level 1, OSEP Educator) and Team Manager Mr. Abel Caine (OSEP MISO), is eager to make a strong showing in Auckland.

The VICTOR Oceania Individual Championships present a significant opportunity for Aidan Caine to showcase his talent and gain invaluable experience against top-level competition, inspiring the next generation of badminton players in Fiji.
