A taxidriver convicted of possessing 0.133 grams of methamphetamine in Sigatoka was recently sentenced to 14 months in jail.
Atish Chand Naicker had pleaded guilty to a count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs committed on July 30 last year.
Court records show the 29-year-old single parent had in his possession a clear plastic containing white crystals confirmed to be meth.
Naicker threw the said plastic before the police reached him with the hope, they would not find it in his possession.
He was arrested, interviewed under caution, where he admitted buying the crystals from a known drug dealer in Cuvu, Sigatoka.
In the mitigating factors, the man asks for the court’s forgiveness and promises never to reoffend.
“I do not see any special circumstance to suspend this sentence as being in possession of hard drugs such as methamphetamine continues to be on the rise in our communities, and so there needs to be a message of deterrence to would-be offenders,” ruled Magistrate Joseph Daurewa.
