Fiji Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne rates Isaiah Armstrong and Inia Tabuavou highly after Tonga clash last week, as they anticipate another tough battle against the USA in the semi-final of the Pacific Nations Cup tomorrow.
Armstrong played well at fullback and Tabuavou showed sheer and determination as a young player last week.
Speaking about Isaiah Armstrong’s performance, Byrne praised the young fullback for his contributions, particularly in controlling territory during the game.
“I liked his ability to give us another strength in our territory battle. You know, that with both Tonga and Samoa, and same with will be with the US a big physical team, and to be able to play them at the right ends of the ground is important.
“He showed his versatility, chasing through a high kick and regaining the ball, and his positioning at fullbacks very good,” Byrne said.
Armstrong’s skills in both attack and defense impressed the coach, as he also played a key role as a first receiver during open play.
“He also gives us another link player and attack to come in and fill in as a first receiver.
“It’s thrown another sort of dimension to our game, without getting too over the top with it. It’s just another dimension to our game, and good kicking territory, and the ability for first receiver to slot in there in open play,” he added.
When asked about Inia Tabuavou’s determination and power, particularly in the early stages of the first half, Byrne acknowledged that the young player is making significant strides in his debut season with the Flying Fijians.
“He’s a young player that is enjoying his first stint with the flying Fijians. I think he’s also enjoying being around some of his teammates from next season and I think it’s made him feel a little bit more relaxed around the environment, and he’s enjoying himself,” Byrne explained.
He commended Tabuavou’s attitude and work ethic, emphasizing how well he’s been training and adjusting to the demands of international rugby.
“He’s going very well and he’s improving every week. He’s training very well as well.”
