AS the FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach, Mick Byrne reflected on the 2025 rugby season, he paid tribute to the players’ families as key figures behind the team’s success.

He highlighted that the physical and emotional support provided by the families plays a significant role in the players’ achievements, which in turn contributes to the overall success of the team.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding when we take your partners away from family, especially fathers away from their children,” he said.

“We know we have fathers with young kids at home, and it is very difficult for them. We are truly grateful to the families for the support they give our players and staff.”

Byrne also acknowledged the staff and their contributions, as well as the support from their families who accommodate the demands of their challenging careers.

“Our staff spend a lot of time away from their families, and we want to thank the partners of both our players and staff for their patience, understanding, and support, which allows our people to become the best they can be,” Byrne added.

Despite sometimes facing criticism from fans, Byrne assured them that the team gives their all, both on and off the field, in appreciation of their support.

“To our fans, we love the way you turn up each week. We understand you see our players working hard, and we truly appreciate the encouragement you give us,” he explained.

“Please know that every training day, we are working extremely hard to improve and perform better on the weekends.”

He concluded by emphasising that it is always a privilege for the team to represent their country every time they step onto the field, a privilege they honour deeply.

“We do not take lightly the honour of representing our country. We understand the responsibility it carries and are committed to working hard every day to get better. Vinaka vakalevu to everyone,” he said.
