THE depth of Fijian players competing in top European competitions continues to strengthen the national side’s consistency as a Tier One nation, says FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne.

Byrne said he is impressed with the progress of Fijian players performing overseas.

“I think the players that are playing up north are playing well, they’re improving.

“The first-class competitions are the best competitions in the world. The English Premiership and the French Top League are the best competitions in the world. Our players training hard, getting better, and they’re performing well. It’s great. I think there’s about another nine or ten young players that are in the academy over there, just about ready to step into the top league as well,” he added.

With the increasing number of Fijian players competing at the highest level has created healthy competition within the national squad.

“There’s another nine or ten young players coming through. We just know that there’s a tremendous amount of depth and it makes it difficult on selection.

“We’re trying to work around who’s the best fit for the team, how everything works,” he added.

There will be some disappointed players.

“Every coach would say they don’t always get selections right, but we go with what we think is going to work best, there’s going to be some disappointed players. I’ll be in touch with as we get start talking to some of those players just let them know that they’re definitely on the radar and looked at for selection.

“They shouldn’t be losing heart. They should be getting excited by the development of the team and really want to be part of the team,” he added.

Byrne also sent out message to the Fijian fans ahead of Sunday’s clash against England.

“For our fans up North, we need you to create some home grounds for us. We need you to get out there with the flags and be nice and loud.

“Let the boys know you’re there. It will feel like home. Just hear the songs and hear the crowd.”
