Business houses in Vanua Levu have welcomed Government’s Tourism Development Program which will boost economic opportunities.

Although this program is a familiar one-to-many business people as it was made known during the FijiFirst Government, they believe it will open marketing opportunities for rural dwellers.

Labasa Chamber of Commerce president Satish Kumar said this would also provide an opportunity to promote cultural handicraft work of rural women.

“We have a lot of talented women in our villages who have the ability and talents to make unique handicraft pieces and sell to tourists,” he said.

“But we don’t have many tourists travelling to Labasa so these women only sell their items in the market or supply customers.

“I believe this program, when it happens, will empower them economically, create a vibrant economy for our towns and increase employment opportunities.”

Mr Kumar said such a program was needed for the North.

Savusavu Chamber of Commerce president Ravi Chhaganlal said the program provided an opportunity for more tourist activities on the island.

“It’s good for the economy and it will definitely bring in more people to Savusavu which is good for hoteliers,” he said.

“We understand that this is the same program funded by World Bank which was revealed last year and we look forward to it.

“Our tourism industry deserves this program and we hope it happens soon.”
