With trade relations between Fiji and New Zealand strengthening by the day, a networking cocktail event hosted by the Fiji New Zealand Business Council (FNZBC) served as the ideal venue for the announcement of an incoming team member for New Zealand’s Trade Commission office in Suva.

The New Zealand High Commission’s Trade Commissioner Pacific, David Dewar said the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE)’s Pacific Trade Commission office in Fiji will be growing.

“I’ve been the beneficiary of a bit of a reorganisation within our agency,” Mr Dewar said at the cocktail event; entrepreneurs, investors and giants of Fiji-New Zealand trade sharing in his pride and promising news.

“NZTE, like many government agencies in New Zealand, is facing a bit of a fiscal crunch. There’s a bit of work going on to reorganise our resources and a number of offices around our network are likely going to see a reduced head count. However, there’s only one that is currently looking to grow, and it is the Suva office,” he said.

“That’s a testament to the New Zealand government really understanding the importance of the organisation, understanding where the Pacific and especially Fiji sits in terms of New Zealand’s economic security.”

FNZBC treasurer Cama Raimuria said the evening’s theme of ‘Scrumming for Success’ “draws a parallel between the competitive nature of rugby and the spirit of entrepreneurship and trade, indicating that when nations work together, they can achieve success.”

Council vice president James Trusler said the next cocktail event for FNZBC is scheduled for December 13, 2023, and with its festive theme, will include carolling performances by children from the St Christopher’s Home.

The ‘Scrumming for Success’ cocktail event was held October 20 at the Paradiso Restaurant and Bar in Suva.
