The first phase of the $3million refurbishment of the Lautoka City Council Bus Station was officially commissioned last Thursday.

During the commissioning of the project, LCC special administrator Taitusi Rasoki said it was a culmination of the hard work of a dedicated team committed to completing the project.

He said they were looking forward to completing the next phase, which would bring much-needed improvement to Lautoka’s transport infrastructure.

One particular group that will benefit immensely from the facelift is the members of the Lautoka Market Vendors Association.

Association president Filomena O’Neil said the refurbishment also meant improved facilities for the vendors.

“For many years, the vendors have had to sit under the hot sun and in the rain to sell their vegetables and crops,” Ms O’Neil said.

“Now they don’t have to worry about that.

“They sit under a proper roof that keeps them safe from the elements.”

Silipa Ovaova of Nalawa in Ra said she would travel every week to Lautoka, expecting to sit under the scorching heat.

“I would bring a tarpaulin to put up as a tent, but now I don’t have to worry about that,” Ms Ovaova said.
