MAJOR changes are on the horizon for Labasa Town as authorities move to relocate the fish market and construct a new bus stand in preparation for the impending closure of the Labasa Bridge.

Labasa Town Council chair Paul Jaduram confirmed that the existing fish market site would be transformed into a construction zone once bridge upgrade works begin.

“The current location of the fish market will be used as the job site. Due to this reason we will be relocating the fish market,” he said.

Mr Jaduram revealed that the council had secured land beside Damodar City, opposite Grand Eastern, for the new facility. Discussions are ongoing with the Lands Ministry to finalise documentation.

“Our teams are working around the clock to get the fish market built as soon as possible.”

In addition, plans are progressing for a new bus stand to ease traffic congestion during the bridge closure, which is expected to last between two and three years.

The proposed bus stand will be built on vacant land near the future Damodar City development, directly opposite New World supermarket.

“This bus stand will serve the western side, including areas such as Siberia, Batinikama, Vunivau, Basoga and many others.”

The existing bus stand will continue to cater for the eastern corridor, servicing Nabouwalu, Dreketi, Savusavu and Naseakula.

Council officials say the changes are necessary to maintain order and accessibility during one of the most significant infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the North.
