Former Fijian 7s rep Seremaia Burotu has urged parents of young rugby players to carefully read through contracts offered by overseas scouts, particularly those from French academies.

Following the Vodafone Super Deans competition, several under-18 players have been identified by French clubs, but Burotu says families must not be blinded by the excitement of an overseas opportunity.

“My advice to young players who are being eyed by overseas scouts now is this take the time to read through the contracts. If the contract is in French, ask for an English translated copy. Make sure you understand every page before signing,” Burotu said.

Burotu who experienced similar challenges in France, said many Fijian players who joined academies overseas often faced difficulties and depended on the help of fellow Fijians.

He reminded parents to always be present during negotiations if their child is under 18 and to ask the hard questions about their child’s welfare.

Burotu said parents should pay close attention to whether accommodation is provided, if there is a food allowance, whether the club will cover living expenses during the first few weeks in France, and if return tickets to Fiji are included in the contract.

“Most times, we are swept away by the excitement of gaining an overseas contract and overlook what is actually written in the fine print,” Burotu added.

He stressed that careful preparation and strong parental involvement are crucial to ensuring Fiji’s young rugby talents are protected as they pursue their dreams abroad.
