Former Fijiana captain Lailanie Burnes, a dedicated advocate for empowering women and girls through sports, embarked on an extraordinary journey as the first Fijian delegate in the ESPNW Global Sports Mentoring Program.

Among 16 international delegates, Burnes’ mission was clear: to strengthen international relations with the United States through sports diplomacy, with the goal of implementing positive changes upon her return to Fiji.

Reflecting on her experience, Lailanie shared, “This program has been a life-changing opportunity, and I feel honoured to represent Fiji on the global stage. Sports have the power to transcend boundaries and create meaningful connections.”

Her journey began with a comprehensive orientation in Washington DC, setting the stage for what would be a transformative adventure.

The next stop was the ESPNW Sports Summit in Ojai, California, where Burnes immersed herself in the vibrant world of sports and gained invaluable insights that would shape her mission.

New York City became the epicentre of Burnes’ learning journey, where she had the privilege of being mentored by Susan Cohig, the executive vice president of Club Business Affairs at the NHL, and her exceptional team.

The Fiji Drua Sponsorship and Hospitality Manager also seized the opportunity to gain insights from the NBA and NFL, rounding out her experience in the heart of the American sports industry.

Burne’s mission extended beyond personal growth; it was about using sports as a catalyst for positive change in Fiji.

Addressing critical issues in Fijian society, including high rates of domestic violence, increasing suicide rates in youth, and the prevalence of non-communicable diseases among women.

Expressing gratitude to those who made her journey possible, including Will Romine, the US Embassy in Suva, the US State Department, the University of Tennessee, and ESPNW, Lailanie encouraged her fellow Fijians and Pacific Islanders to pursue similar opportunities.

“This is not just my journey; it’s an invitation for others to join the movement for positive change in our communities,” she passionately stated. Returning to Fiji armed with newfound knowledge and inspiration, Burnes became a symbol of hope.

Her story showcased the transformative power of sports diplomacy and underscored the potential for individuals to make a lasting impact on their communities.

As she began implementing her program to empower women and girls through sports, Lailanie’s journey became a testament to the enduring influence of passion, perseverance, and the belief that positive change starts with a single person’s commitment.
