IT took Matawalu, Ba high jumper Pita Burese of Sacred Heart College to break the 23-year senior boys high jump record of 2.09m at the Coca-Cola Games yesterday.
Burese cleared the bar at 2.10m to set a new record that broke the previous one set by Antonio Rahiman in 2003.
He had made three attempts to clear the bar for the record-setting mark and when he did so on the third attempt, he immediately began celebrating on the mattress in jubilation at the newfound feat.
After this, officials then moved the bar higher to 2.12m however he could not clear the bar after.
Regardless, Burese emerged from the event with a newfound sense of joy at what he achieved and speaking to Times Sport yesterday, he said he felt excited about it.
“I feel excited today and happy. All thanks to the Man above,” Burese said.
Burese entered as a clear favorite to win gold at this year’s Games, and eyed the opportunity to break the record of 2.09m in 2003.
When interviewed after he jumped 2m at the Coca-Cola Games Suva Zone One meet last month, he emphasized how humility in all things was a critical part of his preparation.
“Slow but sure, but I will always give my best,” he told reporters then.
“I know it’s going to be a tough one but it is good.
“One thing I will keep in my mind is to be humble and accept what comes and what it takes.”
These words foreshadowed his moment of glory, as the bar remained in place, his body soaring higher above.
