Defence will be key for the Digicel Fiji Bula Boys in today’s Melanesian Spearhead Group Prime Minister’s Cup match against Papua New Guinea.
Reflecting on their 1-all draw against Vanuatu in their first match, Fiji head coach Marika Rodu said this was an area that saw them concede a goal in the late stages of the match.
“We need to manage the game well, keep focusing on our defence as you saw towards the end against Vanuatu we conceded a goal and that shows the quality of the opposition and the matches.
“We need to stay concentrated until the last moment.”
Rodu also pointed out the importance of making their chances count.
“We have to utilise our chances that we created because chances hardly come by.”
The two teams have met 18 times and Fiji has won nine of those matches.
PNG has won four while five matches have ended in a draw.
The last time the two sides met was at the FIFA World Cup Qualifier in Port Moresby late last month when the match ended in a 3-all draw.
Fiji will face PNG at 4pm at Lawson Tama Stadium in the Solomon Islands.
