OPPOSITION Leader Inia Seruiratu says 50 villages have been identified for relocation due to climate change, with only six moved so far.

“I would have hoped for Climate Change to have been given more prominence in the 2025-2026 Budget,” he told Parliament.

“Fiji, like many island nations faces severe impacts from climate change including rising sea levels, coastal erosion, more frequent and intense cyclones and increased flooding.”

He said the Fiji Human Rights Commission had also identified an additional 19 villages needing relocation.

“This portrays the enormity of the challenge that we have.”

He called for decisive action and investment in community protection.

“We have a high fuel bill and investments into clean energy initiatives should be encouraged.”

He said Fiji, as a former COP President, must lead on climate-smart investments.
