TWENTY-year-old swimmer Matelita Buadromo is bracing for the biggest moment of her swimming career when she flies the Fiji flag at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The former Yat Sen Secondary School student though failed to qualify during the recent Oceania Swimming Championship held in Suva but was fortunate to make her debut at the Olympics on a wild card entry.
Buadromo said battling against the world’s very best would an uphill battle but was prepared to face the challenge with a ‘never say die’ attitude.
She said she had been training hard under the guidance of her coach and former Olympian Sharon Smith.
“The challenge is very tough and I am lucky to be swimming against some of the best in the world,” said Buadromo.
“There is a lot of swimmers there that are just gunning for that one gold medal and for me my Olympic dream is to win a medal.
“Swimming is a minor sport in Fiji and it will be tough out there but we are getting up there really slowly trying to bridge the gap and I am looking forward to the challenge.”
Buadromo will be taking part in the 200m freestyle and was hopeful of setting a new national record at the meet.
She also thanked her loved ones for supporting her during her highs and lows.”
Buadromo and Meli Malani are the only athletes to represent the country together with their coach Sharon Smith.
