Brodies want gold in PNG

THE husband and wife pair of Shane and Torika Broadie will be gunning for a gold medal at the Pacific Games which begins this week in Papua New Guinea.

The pair will be competing in the Hobbie-16 catergory where the couple are the favourites to win.

The duo will lead an eight-member sailing team to the games and hopes are high as the team has prepared well.

President for Fiji Yachting Association Shayne Brodie said the team was looking forward to the games.

“We have been preparing well for the games with the team sailing together for some time now,” Brodie said.

“We just had our training under the guidance of an international coach Aaron Worall which was fantastic.

“Troika and I have been looking forward for this competition for a while now and hope to give our best shot.

The competition is going to be tough with the likes of Cook Islands, PNG and New Caledonia giving us a tough time.

“But we are confident as we have prepared well and have spent enough time in the water practising.”

Four Hobbie-16 Sailors and Four Lazer Sailors will be part of the team. In the Lazer category two women’s radial sailors and two men’s standard Lazer will take part with two teams in the hobbie-16 category taking part.

The eight-member squad to the Games are Peter Thaggard, Naomi Waqalevu, Salote Taylor, Michael Chan, Shayne Brodie and Torika Brodie, Epeli Droma and Saimoni Nauru.
